A workshop is being held on 12 April, 10.30am-1pm, at Gateshead International Stadium, for members of the taxi and private hire industry to learn more about the electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging network in constant expansion of the region and on the advantages. that switching to electricity could bring to their businesses.
The event is free and open to all Carriage License and Private Hire holders in the North East.
Cenex, the UK’s leading center of excellence for low carbon and fuel cell technologies, is hosting the workshop to highlight the capabilities of electric vehicles and chargers to local traders.
Informative talks will come from Transport North East on the Ultra Low Emission Taxi Infrastructure Program, as well as SWARC Smart Charging and Cenex on the wide range of electric taxis and private hire vehicles available on the market.
The London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC) will also bring two TX electric taxis for demonstration purposes, allowing traders to experience the electric fleet vehicles for themselves.
Given the government’s decision to phase out all petrol and diesel powered cars and vans by 2030, hybrid vehicles following from 2035, and the planned introduction of a government Clean Air Zone (CAZ ) in Newcastle and Gateshead – the workshop is a timely event to help traders make the switch.
Tobyn Hughes, Managing Director of Transport North East, said: “Events like this are key to demonstrating to traders the propensity for electric car travel and the opportunity we have to increase the number of electricity-powered taxis. electricity and other sustainable fuels in the region.
“This event will demonstrate to merchants that the future is electric and help build on the progress we have made so far in installing 10 electric vehicle charging points (8 of which are currently up and running) , especially for taxis in the North East. , thanks to funding from the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV).
“Replacing vehicles in the existing fleet with greener and more sustainable modes of transport will ultimately bring us closer to achieving the aspirations set out in the North East Transport Plan and our new emission vehicle policy. zero, both of which address the urgent need to decarbonize the region’s transport sector by 2035.
Traffic technology group SWARCO Smart Charging, which installed and now manages the infrastructure to boost electric travel in the North East, will also speak at the event about the extensive network of EV charging stations available for commercial vehicles. in the Northeast and the support available to help the taxi industry electrify its fleet.
Carl Christie, Senior Fleet Specialist at Cenex, said: “Electric taxis can play a key role in reducing emissions and poor air quality in city centres, and lowering the running costs of operators.
“This informative workshop will give drivers the confidence to assess the impacts of going electric, help identify preferred charging station locations and highlight support available in the area.
“The North East is moving in the right direction when it comes to decarbonizing transport, and Cenex is proud to be part of this journey.
Justin Meyer, Managing Director of SWARC Smart Charging, said, “We are committed to supporting the success of the North East Transportation Plan and the environmental mission to dramatically reduce carbon emissions in the region.
“We know that reliable, easy-to-use charging technology, positioned in convenient locations for local merchants across the region, is absolutely critical to supporting grid electrification.”
The workshop will conclude with a Q&A discussion and refreshments will be served. Free parking is available on site. Taxi and private hire companies wishing to attend should register prior to arrival at: www.eventbrite.co.uk
